National Football League television ratings down 9.7 percent during 2017 regular season

"While seemingly everyone from the Papa John's guy to the President of the United States has seen fit to weigh in on the NFL's season-long TV ratings slide, pro football's Kung Fu Grip on American viewing habits remains indisputable", wrote Ad Age's Anthony Crupi. Sunday night, Monday night and Thursday night ratings were off. That is a steeper decline than the 8% viewership erosion a year ago.

Nevertheless, NFL games remained among the most watched TV programming, accounting for 33 of the top 50 programs during the year.

The average audience size declined 9.7 percent with 14.9 million viewers compared to the 2016 regular season's viewership of 16.5 million, The Wall Street Journal reported.

But the top-rated United States show was NBC's Sunday Night Football at 18.2 million viewers, even though that was the show's lowest viewership figure since 2008. During the 2015 season, an average of 17.9 million viewers tuned in.

Also, networks have done research that indicates a significant number of fans, especially older ones, were turned off by players who chose to kneel during the playing of the national anthem at the start of games as a way to protest police brutality in urban communities. But as the season went on and the controversy waned somewhat, the ratings decline narrowed. That said, the National Basketball Association has seen a 20 percent jump in viewership compared to the 2016-17 season.

NBC's "Sunday Night Football" averaged 18.2 million viewers, an 11% decline from the previous season and its smallest audience in nearly a decade. The NFL TV numbers are still the best in the business.

The games played in those Sunday time slots will be broadcast on Fox and CBS, according to the report.

Online video highlights are also cutting into TV time.

Sunday is New Year's Eve, "the fact that NFL football has taken a big hit in the ratings department this season" was also a factor.
