Trump seeks $18 billion to extend border wall over 10 years

"I am not sure why President Trump wants to shut down the government over a multi-billion dollar wall that no one wants, is not needed and will not be paid for by Mexico", Sanders said in a statement.

In return for the cash, the Trump administration will be expected to discuss a way forward for the so-called dreamers - illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. by their parents and know no other country. Although DACA expires in early March under Trump's order, for technical reasons advocates and legal experts see late January as a critical juncture for Congress to address the status of 'dreamers'.

Trump is basically saying that he will not fix granting "amnesty" to DACA recipients unless he gets the funding required for the wall and related expenditure. So we have to get rid of the lottery system.

Democrats are willing to compromise on border enforcement but party leaders say they are firmly opposed to building a wall.

President Trump is asking for $18 billion to fund a portion of his promised border wall in exchange for allowing hundreds of thousands of Dreamers-young immigrants brought to the United States illegally-to stay in the country, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"We all want DACA to happen but we all want great security for our country", Trump said.

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin has been meeting with a bipartisan group of senators almost every day to negotiate DACA's future.

President Trump this week asked Congress for $18-B to pay for the 1st phase of The Wall's construction.

Durbin continued, "it's outrageous that the White House would undercut months of bipartisan efforts by again trying to put its entire wish-list of hard-line anti-immigrant bills-plus an additional $18 billion in wall funding-on the backs of these young people".
