LaVar Ball says Lakers 'don't want to play' for Luke Walton

In an interview with's Jeff Goodman, Ball expressed some issues with Walton, including his age, his control of the team and the idea of him coaching either LeBron James or Paul George should either chose to come to the Lakers this offseason. "They don't want to play for him", LaVar Ball said.

On Sunday, Walton was forced to respond to Ball's latest jab - the belief that the Lakers head coach has lost his players. I mean, he's our head coach. If he's ready to play, let him play.

The Los Angeles Lakers are playing "like garbage" these days, and famous TV sports dad LaVar Ball thinks he knows why.

Only, the interview continued, and at one point, Ball was asked plainly if he likes Walton as a coach. "That is all I do, is play".

The response was far from a ringing endorsement of Walton and could be perceived to be the opposite.

Ball made the comments from Lithuania, where he was recently mobbed upon arriving. "I coach as if it's not", he said.

Lakers executives met with LaVar Ball on November 29 to ask him to tone down comments he had made questioning Walton's rotations and overall usage of his son, the No. 2 pick in June's draft.

"It doesn't bother me", Walton said standing just off the court at Staples Center. My only concern with any of it is for [Lonzo Ball].

"I'm fine with it".

Had he lost the locker room?

"I don't see that the players aren't playing hard", Walton said. I'm thinking a little bit too much. We've been through a hard stretch.

The rough stretch Walton is referring to was a nightmarish end to December featuring games against the best teams in the National Basketball Association without break.

It was less than a month ago that the Lakers brass met with Ball about toning down criticism of Walton, the Lakers and how the franchise was handling Lonzo Ball, who returned Friday after missing six games with a sprained left shoulder. LaVar being the father of the team's top draft pick makes things a bit different, but he has no control over how the team plays or what moves they make. "They're 100 percent behind and supporting what we're doing". "I've said all along there's always parents, and parents are going to get mad at things, that's what they do".

"Even if you bring in a LeBron or a (Paul) George, he can't coach them guys", LaVar told ESPN.

Walton added, "I feel very secure in my job status right now". "We talk all the time".

Walton said he "would disagree" with the assertion he had lost the locker room.
