Steve Bannon Issues Apology as Trump Allies Flood the Airwaves

White House Senior Policy Adviser Stephen Miller was a guest on CNN's "State of the Union" where he railed against Wolff's book and Bannon, saying that Bannon's comments were "tragic".

Bannon claimed in his statement that the comments in the book were aimed not at Trump or his family but at Paul Manafort - Trump's former campaign chairman, who was sacked and is facing charges as part of special counsel Robert S. Muller's Russia investigation - who, Bannon said, should have known how the Russians - whom he called "duplicitous, cunning and not our friends" - operate.

In his book, Wolff relied heavily on on-the-record interviews with Bannon, who was critical of other White House aides and Trump's children.

The tell-all book, Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", has prompted a swift backlash from Trump and his White House.

Bannon, who is quoted in a new book calling Donald Trump Jr.s meeting with Russians in 2016 "treasonous", tried to reverse his statements completely, saying that the younger Trump was "both a patriot and a good man". He also said Bannon had nothing to do with the writing of Trump's controversial travel ban.

Extracts from Fire and Fury have raised questions about Trump's mental health, which in turn led to the former reality TV star to tweet he was a "very stable genius". Nikki Haley, the us ambassador to the United Nations, also defended Trump's stability and said, "he didn't become the president by accident".

"There's one viewer you care about right now, and you're being obsequious, you're being a factotum in order to please him", Tapper said, concluding the interview as Miller struggled to get a word in. "Miller said Trump's work was "incredible" and responded that CNN constantly runs anti-Trump material, adding, "...and you're not going to give three minutes to give the American people" what he called "the real experience of Donald Trump".

"I've had to put up with the Fake News from the first day I announced that I would be running for President".

The president also referred to Wolff's book as a "Fake Book" written by a "totally discredited author" in a separate tweet.

The White House on Sunday did not respond to Bannon's statement explaining his portrayal in the book. Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well.

Nikki Haley, the USA ambassador to the United Nations, also defended Trump's stability, saying "he didn't become the President by accident".
