Fired Google engineer who wrote controversial memo sues tech firm

Last August, Google fired engineer James Damore for penning a memo (more of a 3,300-word screeching manifesto) that argued against workplace diversity, which he claimed was damaging to political conservatives, who he said are consequently afraid to speak their minds. However, Damore's attorneys are extra bold in their assertion that another he, along with former Google employee (David Gudeman) and unspecified others, have been wronged to the degree that a class-action lawsuit is warranted.

Ellen Pao's gender-discrimination lawsuit against Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers that went to trial in 2015 also brought the issue to light, and more women have spoken out recently to say they've been sexually harassed in the male-dominated industry.

James Damore's class action lawsuit, filed January 8 with the Santa Clara Superior Court in California, alleges that employees who fit that description were "singled out, mistreated, and systematically punished and terminated from Google".

The complaint seeks monetary damages as well as an injunction against conservative discrimination on the part of Google.

The duo say they want to represent all staff discriminated against due to their "perceived conservative political views, male gender and Caucasian race". Any managers whose workforce didn't include 50 percent women were publicly shamed-and so, according to Damore, were the white male employees hired in their place.

Damore's lawsuit is the latest legal challenge for Google, which also faces a suit for unequal pay.

The exhibits in Damore's suit include several emails sent to him by other Google employees. One was from an engineer who called Damore a misogynist "and a bad person".

Google fired Damore after he wrote a 10-page memo titled "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber: How bias clouds our thinking about diversity and inclusion".

The lawsuit asserts various causes of action and cites to multiple violations of the California Labor Code and the Fair Employment and Housing Act.

The suit claims employees were awarded peer bonuses for arguing against Damore: "In one example of this, an employee gave a Peer Bonus to another employee, and stated that the bonus was for 'speaking up for googley values and promoting [diversity and inclusion] in the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is [Damore's Memo].' The Google Recognition Team reviewed this justification, considered it appropriate, and allowed the bonus to proceed".
