Intel reveals new NUCs with RX Vega graphics

The first available is an 8 generation Intel Core i7-8550U processor that is paired with Pascal-based GeForce MX150 graphics.

Intel boasts that laptops running on the hybrid chips will have better performance than current laptops running on Intel's powerful Core i7 chips and Nvidia's powerful GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU - and they'll have significantly better battery life, too.

It's also Intel's most impressive NUC yet, at least on paper.

While the first systems to run with this include HP and Dell, you have to wonder if Apple's next-gen slim MacBook will take advantage of this new combined CPU and Graphics board later this year.

John Webb, the director of client graphics marketing at Intel, in a press briefing said (via Venture Beat), that the new Core H processors work with High Bandwidth Memory 2 (HBM2), a more power-efficient stacked memory technology that AMD pioneered and has since been turned into an industry standard. It has an 8th-gen quad-core 100W Intel Core i7-8809G 3.1GHz with 4.2GHz turbo mode, and is "unlocked and VR-capable". The former is rather budget, ostensibly for entry-level laptops and convertibles, packing two cores and four threads. "I believe that we will probably see a response from Nvidia, but it will be hard for Nvidia to accomplish the size reductions and efficiency of having everything in one chip like Intel has successfully accomplished".

But what will these chips be used for we hear you cry?

Well, actually they probably could if they wanted to incentivise laptop makers in the same way they did when they were pushing AMD out of the notebook game. This is because these processors actually include dedicated AMD Radeon graphics. Altogether, in its smart play, Intel has announced five CPUs as part of G-series. The new Intel NUC systems offer users up to 3 times the gaming performance when compared to the older Skull Canyon NUC systems launched previous year.

Intel has been teasing this processor line since late 2017, but it's finally here.

All the software for the new chip will be managed by Intel with inputs from AMD, which means consumers will reap the benefits of AMD standby's like watt man and XTU and Intel's custom designed software.

The mobile market is an increasingly competitive, lucrative space, but Intel have not historically had to fight their battles on a pricing basis, so it's going to be interesting to see if they can this time around.
