Ibuprofen can cause male infertility

A growing number of studies shed light on concerning health issues that may arise from NSAIDs and ibuprofen in particular.

A popular pain medication often popped by men who suffer minors aches and pains related to sports may be linked to infertility, according to a new study.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug sold without a prescription for short-term treatment of pain, inflammation from injuries, and fever. The first group was given a daily 600 milligrams dosage of ibuprofen; the second group was given a placebo.

Within just two weeks, it seems that the testosterone-producing hormones in the subjects became linked to the amount of ibuprofen in their blood.

They tracked how ibruprofen affected them, noting that the painkiller can affect your body's hormone levels.

'Through a clinical trial with young men exposed to ibuprofen, we show that the analgesic resulted in the clinical condition named "compensated hypogonadism" - a condition prevalent among elderly men and associated with reproductive and physical disorders, ' explains Dr David Kristensen, of Copenhagen University.

The research focused on men given 600mg of ibuprofen twice a day, which isn't the norm for the average bloke.

Previous research by European scientists showed that male babies whose mothers took ibuprofen experienced disturbances to their endocrine system, according to CNN. "Ibuprofen is a very useful drug for acute pain conditions, its benefits have been well proven, but it is important to consider that hypogonadism may be an additional risk factor that people need to watch for when taking the drug for a long time", he said. The resulting imbalance produced a condition called compensated hypogonadism, which is associated with lower fertility, depression and an increased risk for cardiovascular events like strokes or heart failures.

But long-distance runners and athletes who regularly take ibuprofen during training or sports matches in order to ward off inflammation may want to keep an eye on the research. LH's job is to stimulate the production of testosterone, so higher levels of LH without corresponding higher levels of testosterone could suggest an issue in the way the body's hormones are functioning.

Fortunately, the condition went away in the volunteers when they stopped taking the medication.

The findings are certainly significant, as the 1,200mg of ibuprofen given to the participants each day is far below the suggested daily maximum of 3,200mg per day.
