Google quietly purchased a United Kingdom sound tech startup

Google did not provide Bloomberg with any details, including purchasing price or other acquisition information.

It reported that Redux is able to turn screens into a speakers by vibrating the screen itself using small actuators.

Hopefully, it won't be too long until Google integrates this technology into their system, because we'll be able to have even thinner devices with bigger batteries.

The startup called Redux developed the technology called Panel Audio that allowed the panels or screens to produce audio without needing any speakers. But in the recent years, Google and other Alphabet subsidiaries have started focussing quite a lot on hardware products including Pixel smartphones, which seems like a good place to use the tech. According to regulatory filings, the transfer of shares was confirmed in December.

At the time, it said the sound quality was 'decent'. According to its LinkedIn page, Redux has been 78 granted patents, over 50 pending patent applications, and global engagement with leaders in multiple vertical markets, our vision is to bring the next generation of user experience to every consumer.

So far, Redux has only been able to use its technologies inside PCs and some auto infotainment systems - but that could be about to change.

Component space is indeed at a premium now in smartphones, which is why both Google and Apple Inc. made the controversial decision to ditch the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack in the newer Pixel and iPhone models.

Alphabet has a range of potential uses for the technology. It could also improve waterproofing for future phones since it eliminates the need for speaker holes.

Google (GOOG, GOOGL) acquired a United Kingdom speaker tech startup late previous year for undisclosed terms. If Google doesn't put Redux's technology in a smartphone, it's certainly possible that the company could put it on one of its very own Smart Displays.
