Bell threatens to sit or retire if franchise tagged again

Even with Antonio Brown having an MVP-caliber season, one could argue that Bell is Pittsburgh's most important offensive player. Unfortunately, this time it was Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Le'Veon Bell.

While Bell should not want to play under the franchise tag for a second straight season, that's really up to the Steelers organization unfortunately. As one of the team's top pass catchers, Bell's presence is known on nearly every play.

Bell still has plenty left in the tank professionally, but he's not onboard with playing under the franchise tag again for the second straight season. After that, they have until July 16 to work out a long-term contract. The two sides could not come together on a deal, however, and Bell ended up holding out for the entire preseason before ultimately signing his tender shortly before the season.

He held out until September 4 before signing a $12.1 one-year tender. If they win that game, it's on to the AFC championship. Based on Thursday's comments, however, Bell and the Steelers could be looking at some contentious contract negotiations this coming offseason.

National Football League teams generally consider the time value of draft picks when making trades, so a 2019 third-round pick (at the end of the round, no less) would be worth about a late second-rounder or early third-rounder this year. As far as Roethlisberger, the two-time Super Bowl champion said on Wednesday that he is not even thinking about the possibility that the game against the Jaguars could be his last game at Heinz Field.

Bell's earning power may never be higher than it is this offseason, so it's little surprise he's willing to do whatever it takes to get as much money as possible-whether from the Steelers or another team. Now the headlines are what might happen with Bell next season.

Le'Veon Bell isn't messing around.

. But the Steelers also might be too cap-stricken to hang on to him much longer, so it's also thriftier - and possibly savvier, for the long term - move to let him go now.
