Iran says hundreds of protesters released from detention

Iran says the nuclear deal is not renegotiable and it will stick to the accord as long as the other signatories respect it but will "shred" the deal if Washington pulls out.

Whatever happens in the short term, the Iranian nuclear deal, or the Joint Comprehensive Programme of Action (JCPOA) as it is called, is beginning to resemble the stricken Iranian oil tanker now adrift and blazing between China and Japan, which will sink or become a burnt-out hulk of no use to anyone.

Some critics expressed concern that Trump's threats risk isolating the United States and may possibly move Iran toward renewing its pre-agreement nuclear weapons development.

Is Trump being tough on Iran?

"Our worst fears are being confirmed", he said.

Russian Federation - one of the parties to the Iran pact alongside the United States, China, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union - called Mr Trump's comments "extremely negative".

But while Europeans also are concerned about Iran's behavior in non-nuclear issues, they have called the nuclear agreement successful and essential to their security. He also announced sanctions against individual Iranian officials for alleged corruption and human rights abuses during the recent street protests in Iran. Iranian-born commentator Meir Javadanan told WIN, "Trumps' threats can not work".

Moving forward, the President outlined two paths forward on Iran: either fix the flaws set out above or withdraw from the deal.

Iran "will not accept any amendments in this agreement, be it now or in the future, and it will not allow any other issues to be linked to the JCPOA", the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, using the 2015 deal's technical name. "No one should doubt my word".

One hard-liner, Hamidreza Taraghi, said he was not afraid that Trump's ultimatum would lead to a collapse of the agreement.

Iranian officials said Sunday that hundreds of people detained in recent weeks during anti-government protests have been released and acknowledged that at least 25 people were killed during the unrest.

Under increased scrutiny, Tehran on Saturday lifted restrictions on Telegram, acknowledging that the social networking app had been "filtered" during the protests, state media reported.
