The polling shows that most Australians don't know what historical event Australia Day commemorates and most people are not aware it wasn't always celebrated on this date.

The survey of 1,417 Australians last December by the left-leaning Australia Institute reveals shocking levels of ignorance about the country's history and the inspiration behind the choice for the country's national day.

Late past year, youth radio station Triple J made headlines when it announced the annual Hottest 100 countdown would be moved away from January 26 following a listener survey.
