Police seize £33m stash of cocaine hidden in pineapples

You'll often hear of creative ways drug smugglers transport their product. Now, they have resorted to hiding their narcotics inside of tropical fruit.

Police in Portugal and Spain recently seized over 1,600 pounds of cocaine hidden inside of fresh pineapples at the port of Lisbon.

Through August a year ago, Sri Lankan customs seized six shipments of high-quality South American cocaine in 14 months, including Asia's largest-ever haul of the drug in December 2016, at its main port. Along with the pineapple discovery, authorities also dismantled a lab where the cocaine was being cut with additives. The seizure was part of an ongoing investigation across both countries that began in April of 2017.

Six police records showed that two hydraulic presses, three packaging machines, and over 400,000 Euros in cash were among the things found in the raids.

The drug was packed in cylinders, covered in yellow wax to look like fruit, then covered by previously emptied out pineapple skins, according to the Spanish Interior Ministry. Apparently, the gang had the cocaine stored in Terrassa, Barcelona and transported it to Madrid laboratories every 15-20 days.

Spain and Portugal are two major routes used by drug smugglers to get their products into Europe.

On that occasion, about 1,770 kg of cocaine, with a value of $140 million, was seized, of which 840 kg was found in sugar shipments from Brazil. No word if these were all committed by the same gang, but it does pose a another question.
