Twitter to inform 677775 people they interacted with Kremlin-linked account

Twitter plans to notify users who may have [seen] content tweeted during the 2016 USA presidential race by accounts connected to the Internet Research Agency, a St. Petersburg "troll farm" implicated in Russia's alleged election meddling.

The accounts include @TEN_GOP, a Republicans group in Tennessee that pushed pro-Donald Trump tweets, @Pamela_Moore13, a conservative personality, and @crystal1johnson, a black woman who was critical of USA police. "Our work on these issues will never be done, and we will continue in our efforts to protect Twitter against bad actors and networks of malicious automation and manipulation".

Twitter initially said it had discovered 2,200 accounts tied to a troll farm which uses fake social media accounts to stir controversy and conflict.

677,775 people saw followed or retweeted one of these accounts during that same period, and are being notified.

Current and former members of the Trump administration, as well as a member of President Donald Trump's family interacted with those accounts, CNN found.

Twitter said that because it has already suspended the agency's accounts, their tweets are no longer publicly available on its platform.

These accounts sent more than 175,000 tweets, the company said.

Check your email to see if you got duped by a Russian Twitter bot during the 2016 election

Along with Google and Twitter, Facebook has been criticised for allowing the spread of bogus news - some of which was directed by Russian Federation - ahead of the 2016 United States presidential election and in other countries.

In total, the Russian-created content amounted to a "very small fraction" of overall Twitter activity in the ten weeks prior to the actual vote.

Twitter said it also found 13,512 new Kremlin-linked bot accounts, bringing the total number of bots it has found in connection to Russia's election influence efforts to 50,258.

Going forward, Twitter says it will invest in more ways to limit "fake, coordinated and automated account activity".

Senator Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate intelligence panel, echoed this view, tweeting: "I've been tough with Twitter on this, but I'm encouraged to see the company beginning to take responsibility and notify its users of Russia's influence on its platform".

"With our current capabilities, we detect and block approximately 523,000 suspicious logins daily for being generated through automation", Twitter posted.
