White House slams Flake: He is looking for attention

Reporters in the White House press corp challenged Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Wednesday about whether the Trump administration is concerned about what former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon could reveal to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and congressional investigators.

Next, Sanders said Flake's speech was simply a call for "attention", amid flagging poll numbers, though she did not mention he is not seeking re-election, lessening the need for stellar favorables.

Flake spoke on the floor Wednesday to criticize the way Trump handles the press, comparing Trump to infamous Soviet Union dictator Josef Stalin. "He went to Cuba a few weeks ago and served as a mouthpiece for the oppressive Cuban government", Sanders shot back, referring to Flake's comments earlier this month that there is "no evidence" that the Cuban regime tried to harm us diplomats.

"He's not criticizing the president because he's against oppression", she added.

"He's criticizing the President because he has awful poll numbers", she concluded. "And if one happens, I think you only have one place to look, and that's to the Democrats", Sanders said during her Wednesday press briefing.

Flake visited Cuba late a year ago and argued he saw no evidence US diplomats in Havana were attacked by the communist Castro government.

The communist regime in Cuba has denied launching the attacks, putting Flake squarely in defense of the regime's lies as he criticizes President Trump for oppressing American media.

Sanders's comments about Flake's trip to Cuba centered on his visit earlier this year.

Flake, who has been supportive of easing travel restrictions on Cuba, told The Associated Press that he doesn't doubt the Cuban government's assertion that the diplomats were not attacked.
