Trump seeks $25 billion for border wall, offers 'Dreamer' citizenship

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he's open to an immigration plan that will provide a pathway to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of young people who were brought to the country as children and are now here illegally.

Trump said he wanted to offer the Dreamers, protected from deportation by the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, an "incentive" of citizenship perhaps in 10 to 12 years.

Farrell said he immigrated to the U.S.as a child from Ireland and recently became a US citizen.

In return, Trump wants border security including the all funding, curbing extended family reunification known as "chain migration", cancelling the green-card visa lottery, and providing a permanent solution on DACA.

On Monday, Democrats struck a deal to reopen the government until February 8, securing six years of funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and a vote on DACA in the process.

The immigration issue is now in flux with barely two weeks before a February 8 deadline agreed by both parties to either strike a deal, or take the issue to the Senate floor for debate before the "Dreamers" face mass deportation in March.

But it's an everyday experience for White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

"If you don't have a wall, you don't have DACA", Trump said reiterating his intent to end the chain migration and diversity visa program.

Another issue is the unaccompanied minor and family unit program, which Trump has called "one of the largest loopholes in USA border security".

Asylum fraud needs to be fixed, as does the huge backlog in asylum cases, Trump said in October.

"This statement represents presidential leadership on immigration that will allow us to solve a hard problem".

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican pointman on the immigration negotiations, hailed Trump's comments as a major breakthrough.

"We certainly support full transparency", Sanders replied when asked if the White House supported efforts to release the document.

"We want to see a legislative package that addresses the four things we laid out and can get to the president's desk", Sanders said, adding that the White House's plan is being crafted with an aim of getting it through both chambers in mind.

White House officials said their initial proposal would be limited to the 690,000 who were enrolled in DACA when Trump terminated the program. The immigration debate has become far more divisive than the last one five years ago, when a comprehensive deal passed the Senate but was never called for a vote in the House.

Chief of staff John Kelly spoke to Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and updated the President on the talks.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said he had offered and then rescinded border wall funding in exchange for Dreamer protections, said Wednesday he was looking for a reset.
