How Google fights Android malware

Google removed 700,000 apps from the Play Store in 2017 that had violated the store's policies.

As far as raw numbers are concerned, Google took down 700,000 rouge apps in 2017, an increase of 70 percent over 2016's approximate 400,000.

"They do this by trying to sneak in impersonating apps to the Play Store through deceptive methods such as using confusable unicode characters or hiding impersonating app icons in a different locale". It appears that the safeguards did not really work since more than 700,000 apps were removed from Google Play past year. Global consumer spending across the App Store and Play Store was also record-breaking in Q4, growing 20% year-over-year (YoY) to exceed $17 billion.

Android's ability to pull in more new users to apps than iOS is a byproduct of Google's efforts and investments in emerging markets. However, it appears that Google is making inroads in taking out those kinds of apps before they are downloaded to the billions of Android users. We take these extremely seriously, and will continue to innovate our capabilities to better detect and protect against abusive apps and the malicious actors behind them.

The relatively open nature of Android has made it a target for malware authors and other bad actors of all stripes who often try to get their wares onto your phone through both the official Google Play Store, third-party app stores and any other way they can think of. Google claims that many of its Files Go users use SD cards to back up their files.

Google doesn't allow apps that contain or promote inappropriate content, such as pornography, extreme violence, hate, and illegal activities.

According to Ahn, copycat apps are usually created to resemble popular mainstream apps and is a popular method of deceiving users.

Some 79 percent of the value came from digital content and service purchases within apps, 15 percent from mobile advertisements, and the rest from payments for app downloads, according to the association Bitkom. Potentially Harmful Applications are those that try to get your personal information. But, Google is trying its best to make Android and its applications as safe as possible.

Still, Google's Play Store protection isn't flawless.
