Google Flights now predicts delays and makes sense of cheaper tickets

Google will also give an explanation for the tardiness, such as a previous flight arrived late, or there is a problem with the weather.

Google has updated its travel search engine to predict flight delays. Once the algorithms are 80 percent sure there'll be a delay, the information will appear in search results when you look up your flight number, route, or airline.

Google Flights can now predict whether your next flight may be delayed.

However, it's still likely to give passengers a sense they're likely to be held up before the airlines officially confirm the delay. Another new feature, designed with the budget traveler in mind, reveals exactly what comes with a basic Economy fare ticket, and what is excluded.

The app's machine learning system relies on historic flight info to make its delay predictions.

Google added a second new feature on Wednesday geared towards exposing the poor value in so-called "basic economy" fares.

This could help with making arrangements at the other end of the journey, but Google is still advising folks get to the airport on time. For example, how much luggage can you carry on your flight? So if you're going to buy a ticket, the service will start showing you if additional services and features like overhead baggage space, baggage fees, or the ability to select your seat will cost more, or if it's included in the advertised ticket price. "Now Google Flights surfaces that information for flights on American, Delta, and United".
