UNG hosts Black History Month events

Today, at the beginning of Black History Month, Google has chose to celebrate the "father of black history" Carter G. Woodson.

"If it wasn't for Black History Month, a rich history of Black people that helped shape B.C. would be lost on today's youth", said society vice-president Ron Nicholson. Blacks and Black History Month has come along way in that short span of time.

The theme of this year's event is "Black Excellence", celebrating African American entrepreneurs.

WEAVER said, "Celebrating BLACK HISTORY MONTH is a balance between positive and negative; and there are more positives then some would lead you to believe".

Men of Excellence, an organization that supports minority males on campus, has hosted the "Continuing the Legacy Walk" since 2015.

Those are the words of Sharon Sheffield, the first African-American woman to serve as Lynn Haven Mayor.

The final event in the series is an evening of African and African-American folklore 7 p.m. February 19. There is no reason that racism should still be an issue because of how much we have progressed as a country. "It is important to remember the inequities of our past and present".

"Woodson was committed to bringing African-American history front and center and ensuring it was taught in schools and studied by other scholars", Sherice Torres, Director of Brand Marketing at Google and member of the network, explained in a post about the Google Doodle.

Schools will showcase their learning on February 28 during an event in the Joshua Creek Public School library in Oakville.

When viewed correctly, we see that understanding this long-ignored part of our national history benefits all Americans, regardless of race.

In its second year, the lyceum, named in Woodson's honor, now focuses on educating West Virginians about critical issues surrounding education and freedom of expression, especially pertaining to minorities of color and of different ethnicities, and the Black History Month events largely reflect its mission.

"We walk on ground that still bears evidence of slavery and resistance to segregation".
