Fiji roll South Africa to win Hamilton Sevens

They were a man down in the first minute and changed ends trailing 17-5.

Organisers, the police and World Rugby have given the inaugural Hamilton Sevens tournament a resounding thumbs up.

Olympic champions Fiji triumphed in a closely fought final against South Africa at the World Rugby Sevens Series event in Hamilton.

New Zealand then won a crucial turnover with England attacking their line and Vilimoni Koroi burst through a gaping hole with great speed to claim a 12-7 lead at the break.

As it turned out that was Australia's final score in the match even though they started the second half with a one-man advantage.

New Zealand are second on 69, while Fiji have moved up to third place on 62.

Bottom-rooted Kisii also registered their first win of the campaign after upsetting visiting Mwamba 18-12 as Kenya Harlequin humiliated Regional Logistics Mombasa 80-0 at the RFUEA.

A superb second half performance saw the Fijian team storm back, with Alasio Sovita Naduva finishing the match with a hat-trick of tries, helping his team to a dramatic 24-17 win.

It was a little push too late as Kenya went down by a four point margin.

It was not such a smooth run for Fiji who needed their get-out-of-jail card to beat Samoa 12-10 in the quarter-finals with Kalioni Nasoko running 95 metres to score the winning try on the last play of the game.

Samoa, meanwhile, finished fifth with a 19-15 win over Kenya.

The Blitzboks will meet Fiji in the final later on Sunday.

In Hamilton, Kenya beat both Samoa and Canada with identical 19-14 margins in pool matches, drew 19-19 with US, before losing 33-12 to Australia in Cup quarters.

Cup quarter-finals: Fiji 12-10 Samoa, New Zealand 19-12 England, Kenya 12-33 Australia, South Africa 22-0 Scotland.
