IPhone owners who paid full price for battery may get rebate

Apple is exploring whether to offer rebates to customers who previously purchased fresh iPhone batteries in the wake of a controversy about its practice of slowing down older devices.

The Silicon Valley firm has also been working hard to squeeze money out of its existing customers, with the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and Apple Pay all enjoying their biggest quarters ever.

Last week, the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission said they were investigating whether Apple violated securities laws concerning its disclosures that it slowed older iPhones with flagging batteries, Bloomberg reported.

Apple has seen "strong demand" for replacement iPhone batteries and may offer rebates for consumers who paid full price for new batteries, the company said in a letter to U.S. lawmakers made public on 6 February.

According to a report by The Financial Times, which also links to discussions on Apple's Support Communities, hundreds of customers have complained about the issue.

As for newer models Apple revealed in the letter how the 2017 iPhones deal with the battery issues. The company apologised and lowered the price of battery replacements for affected models from US$79 to US$29. The company has been criticized for not acting transparently when it sent the software updates.

Otherwise, the letter is a slightly more detailed description of the timeline of events leading up to, during, and after the battery controversy.

The Apple letter contains two pieces of information that prompt more questions rather than shed any light on the situation.

Will customers who paid full price for a new battery to speed up their older iPhones get a rebate? Apple states it will update the senate committee at some point in the future when it decides how to handle these cases. "It also will allow customers to see whether the power management feature that dynamically manages maximum performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns is on, and they can choose to turn it off".

The smartphone maker is now offering certified refurbished models of its two-year-old flagship online, meaning those interested in an iPhone 7 don't have to bargain hunt through third-party sellers.

"iOS 11.3 will add new features to give customers greater visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery", Apple said.

The tech giant noted that possibility in a letter to Sen.

In the letter dated February 2, Apple provided a timeline of events surrounding the issue, some technical details, and answers to eight questions Thune had asked early last month.

"For advanced technologies like an iPhone, consumers rely on clear and transparent disclosures from manufacturers to understand why their device may experience performance changes", said Thune in a statement.

The last question was about whether the company had considered allowing customers who'd paid full price for a new battery "to seek a rebate for some of the purchase price".
