Russian athletes in new authorized battle with IOC

Thirty-two Russian athletes have appealed against their exclusion from this month's Winter Olympics.

"The parties are exchanging written submissions and a hearing is likely to be held on 7 February 2018.

We expected that the CAS decision would dispel all suspicions against the athletes", Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

IOC had banned Russian Federation from participating in the Pyeongyang Olympic Winter Games on charges of engaging in doping by 'manipulating the anti-doping system at the Sochi Games in 2014.

It noted that CAS had yet to provide a "full reasoning" for overturning the bans and that there was evidence about the athletes that had not been available to the Oswald Commission, which conducted the investigation into Russian doping.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made a decision to decline 15 Russian athletes who had been earlier acquitted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) access to the Winter Olympic Games, head of the IOC commission for admission of Russian athletes to the Games Nicole Hoevertsz has said.

According to the statement, the grounds for the lawsuit were the non-transparent nature of the criteria that has been applied, the discrimination based on citizenship grounds, the illegal nature of the decision, failure to comply with the CAS verdict, damage to reputation, dignity and professional careers.

CAS added that as well as short-track speedskating great Ahn, the 32 include world cross-country skiing champion Sergei Ustyugov and world biathlon champion Anton Shipulin.

The suit against the Olympic body was initiated by lawyers following the IOC's refusal to invite 13 athletes, all with clean doping histories, to the upcoming Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, despite their lifetime bans being overturned earlier by CAS.

On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach had expressed disappointment on the CAS decision to clear the Russian athletes.

Gold medallist Alexander Tretyakov of Russia celebrates during the victory ceremony for the men's skeleton event at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia Feb 16, 2014.

"We very much regret it".

Hoevertsz said at the 132nd International Olympic Committee session that the decision not invite 15 acquitted Russians was unanimously taken by the International Olympic Committee commission, reports Tass news agency.

However, it appeared to be an unpopular opinion from Pound, who along with Britain's Adam Pengilly was the only delegate to abstain from an otherwise unanimous vote of confidence in the IOC's handling of the Russian suspension.

"The IOC also suspended the ROC based on the reports of alleged doping violations released by the Oswald Commission IOC commission, headed by former Switzerland President Samuel Schmid, banning the national team from participating in the 2018 Olympic Games".
