Gunmen storm Srinagar hospital, help Pakistani terrorist escape

J&K Director General of Police S.P. Vaid told The Hindu that recently six Pakistani prisoners were ordered to be moved from Srinagar Central Jail to Jammu but the accused, Mohammed Naveed Jhutt alias Abu Hunzala, got a stay order from a city court in December past year.

Twenty-two-year-old Naveed -who also goes by the name Abu Hanzullah-was arrested in 2014.

The escapade, police claim, was wellplanned as Jutt (22, from Multan in Pakistan) had himself requested for the checkup for this date at the hospital.

Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid said that the attack appeared to be well-coordinated and it looks that the communication about Naveed's movement had gone from Central jail.

An eyewitness said: "I heard gunshots and saw two policemen lying in pool of blood as people ran towards the main gate and inside the hospital premises".

The state police named the victims as head constable Mushtaq Ahmad, who died on the spot, and constable Babar Ahmad, who succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Mushtaq Ahmad is survived by wife and an adopted minor daughter (10), while as the constable Babar Ahmad Khan is survived by wife, two daughters (aged three and two years), father, four brothers and one unmarried sister. The other five prisoners were still in the vehicle with more escort personnel guarding them. "Naveed himself snatched the weapon of one of the policeman and opened fire", said a police official. Naved is absconding with the snatched weapon. He had a scuffle with escorting police party and suddenly two persons appeared and opened fire.

According to police, the terrorists opened fire in the casualty area where the six prisoners were being held. Emergency, OPD and other services at the hospital have resumed.

Police officials said that they wanted to shift Jhutt and the five other prisoners from Srinagar jail to prisons outside the Valley but were disallowed to do so by a sessions court on December 26, 2017.

Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Mehmood Shah has extended his hearty congratulations to militants for getting one of their fellows freed from the custody of police, saying the incident was "an outcome of close coordination and cooperation among various Mujahideen organizations".
