The 3 Ways Zuma Exits The Union Buildings

Zuma is under growing pressure to step down in favour of his deputy and African National Congress (ANC) party leader Cyril Ramaphosa, with local media suggesting an exit deal is being hammered out.

Mr Zuma, 75, was replaced as party leader by Mr Ramaphosa, his 65-year-old deputy, in December.

The national executive committee meeting, which was scheduled to take place on Wednesday - the day after Mashatile's talk at the indaba - was later cancelled.

Emergency party talks were held in Johannesburg on Sunday.

"Throughout this process, I am guided by the principle that the interests and needs of the South African people are paramount", Ramaphosa said.

Asked about the ongoing talks surrounding Zuma, ANC spokeswoman Khusela Diko said: "There is no crisis within the ANC, we are used to robust discussions".

This as the nation waits to see whether, and how, the ANC will remove President Jacob Zuma from office.

If the ANC had made a decision to withdraw all their support, President Zuma would not have a majority in parliament, making it hard for him to resist.

South Africa's sovereign dollar bonds fell across the curve on Thursday with the 2041 issue down 1.7 cents to trade at a near two-month low as the political deadlock over President Jacob Zuma's future continued.

Maimane said he had consulted with the leadership of the Economic Freedom Fighters to push for an urgent anti-Zuma motion of no confidence on February 13.

"We were saying to President Zuma on Sunday that we don't want two centres of power, we want president Ramaphosa to take control not only of the ANC, but [also] the affairs of the state".

Unlike in August when Zuma survived a no-confidence vote, a significant portion of the ANC now wants him gone. Mr Ramaphosa is set to succeed him as president.

Both Mr Zuma and the Guptas deny the allegations.

Parliament Speaker Baleka Mbete told television broadcaster eNCA yesterday that Ramaphosa would soon give an update on the political turmoil.

Meanwhile, opposition parties - who welcomed the unprecedented postponement of the State of The Nation Address - said that the ANC could not hold the nation to ransom.

As a result of his stance, the ruling party's NEC looked to have little choice but to officially recall him from office, which would have been a major embarrassment for a man who devoted his life to the former liberation movement.
