How Trump's Refusal To Confront Russia May End Up Hurting Israel

Days after Israel's Air Force (IAF) carried out several attacks inside Syria and caused extensive damage to its air defense network, a Syrian official claimed Assad's forces caught Israel off guard and still has more "surprises" in store.

The UAV entry into Israeli airspace sparked a response from the Israeli Defense Forces that included striking a dozen Iranian targets in Syria just over an hour later. An IAF F-16 jet also crashed, after its two pilots ejected.

He added, "This event is the first of its kind in tens of years".

But Israel's increasing involvement is playing into the hands of Iran.

Iran's growing threat to Israel in southern Syria notwithstanding, Saturday's incident may have been Moscow's way of sending a stern message to Washington.

An Iranian general, meanwhile, said Monday the Islamic Republic is doubling down on efforts to bolster its missile launching capabilities.

In a sense, Israel has demonstrated its desire to trigger an inter-state war as soon as possible, in order to turn the page of proxy wars.

"To those who say 'if they hit us, we will respond with force, ' it is clear that they have never experienced the Ottoman slap", he said.

"This is a serious Iranian attack on Israeli territory".

The air force then launched a second wave of "large-scale" strikes, including against "four Iranian targets that are part of Iran 's military establishment in Syria", an Israeli military statement said.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised speech, vowed to protect his country against Iran, holding it and the Syrian government accountable for what he called catastrophic developments. Instead, Putin is using Iran to provide ground forces and enlisting contractors, like those Cossacks from a private Russian company named Wagner, to fight and die - as dozens did the other day in a US airstrike - on the ground.

"We continue to work with the Russians and with other partners in the region to support the Geneva process". President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation immediately spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to stop events spiraling out of control. "And through that process, we believe Syria will strengthen its independence and will take its own actions to reduce and ultimately reject the influence of Iran inside of Syria", clarifying that "Iran's influence inside of Syria is not positive, it is a negative, because they bring with it instability, they bring with it violence".

Nevertheless, Israel immediately received support from the White House for its "right to defend itself". By causing heavy damage to Syrian defense infrastructure but not going "all the way" and completely decimating all air defense units, Israel is well positioned to deter future incursions into its airspace. It is both a strategic ally of Israel, and at the same time it enjoys some level of access or reliability from Iran. "Iran is dragging the region into an adventure in which it doesn't know how it will end", Israel's chief military spokesman, Brig. Maybe Russia and the U.S., Iran and Israel, or Turkey and the Assad regime will now be able to agree on the lines not to be crossed. Both Turkey and Iran are anxious due to their Kurdish minorities, which have argued for independence in decades past.

The U.S. has accused the Syrian government of using chlorine gas or other chemical weapons on civilians in rebel enclaves. Russian Federation is still bombing areas around Damascus not controlled by the regime, which activists say is causing scores of civilian deaths and many people are trapped without adequate food or medical care.
