White House proposing to change how millions of Americans eat

Comparing the new proposal to Blue Apron, an American ingredient-and-recipe meal kit service, founded in 2012, the delivered food boxes would include "shelf-stable" items such as juice, pasta, ready to eat cereal, canned meat, pasta, peanut butter and beans. "And with additional food waste, increased families may need additional food as well", said Ashton Tippins, the executive director with the TABLE in Carrboro. The rest of their benefits would be provided on electronic benefit cards as they are now.

Households that receive $90 or more in SNAP benefits would get a box of 100 percent US -grown and produced food. According to Politico, the box would contain "100 percent US grown and produced food" and would feature foods like "shelf-stable milk, peanut butter, canned fruits and meats, and cereal".

Millions of people nationwide depending on food stamps will see benefits slashed if Congress agrees to President Trump's current budget proposal.

Kevin Concannon, who oversaw SNAP during the Obama administration, was aghast when he saw the proposal. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that it could supply these goods at about half the cost of retail, enabling it to reduce the cost of SNAP while still feeding the needy. "So we're pretty excited about that", Mulvaney said during the briefing Monday. Members of the House Agriculture Committee, which oversees that program, have been laying the groundwork for the next reauthorization for the past several years.

Stricter work requirements would be enacted for households with able-bodied adults to continue to receive food stamps under the "Welfare to Work" section of Trump's proposed budget.

"How are those cities going to deliver food to rural America?" "States will have substantial flexibility in designing the food box delivery system through existing infrastructure, partnerships, or commercial/retail delivery services".

What isn't clear is how the food would be distributed to millions of SNAP recipients who live all over the country, including dense urban areas and sparsely populated rural regions. These boxes would be filled with products using portions of what an individual would usually get via food stamps.

Florida is third - behind California (No. 1) and Texas - in the nation for use of food stamps in 2016, having redeemed $5.1 billion in food stamps that year.

Nevertheless, Akright said he worries that cuts to food stamps will negate the food bank's expansion. The federal government proposes giving recipients less cash on their EBT card in exchange for a box of non-perishable food.
