Kushner Pushing Back On Kelly's Effort To Revoke Interim Clearance

Kelly wrote in a memo to White House Consel Don McGahn, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and four other top officials that he would soon severely limit the access of top aides operating with "interim" security clearances, a group that reportedly includes Kushner.

President Trump's spokeswoman also said she was unaware of any time he had "overruled" the White House's Office of Personnel Security, which makes final clearance recommendations to the West Wing.

Almost a year into the Trump administration, some senior-level staffers - including daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Kushner - remained on interim clearances even as other senior advisers were granted full security access, according to information obtained by CNN from a USA government official.

White House security clearances were thrust front-and-center this month following the deporture of Trump's former staff secretary Rob Porter.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is probing US President Donald Trump's son-in-law's efforts to get foreign investors, including in China, to provide financing for his company during the presidential transition, CNN reported on Monday.

One week after Mr Trump's Nov 8, 2016, election, Mr Kushner met with the chairman and other executives from the Chinese group Anbang Insurance, The New York Times has reported.

Mueller Eyes Kushner's Pursuit of Foreign Financing: Report

"I can tell you that no decision within the memo will impact anything that Jared Kushner is working on", press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.

"I will not comment on anybody's specific security clearance situation", Kelly said, adding that "as I told Jared days ago, I have full confidence in his ability to continue performing his duties in his foreign policy portfolio including overseeing our Israeli-Palestinian peace effort".

But Mr. Kelly, who has been privately dismissive of Mr. Kushner since taking the post of chief of staff but has rarely taken him on directly, has made no guarantees, saying only that the president's son-in-law will still have all the access he needs to do his job under the new system...

Sanders also denied being aware of any "red flags" in Kushner's background check that might deny him a permanent clearance.

"Everyone in the White House is grateful for these valuable contributions to furthering the president's agenda", Kelly said of Kushner. "There is no truth to any suggestion otherwise", Kelly said.

Kushner's lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said that the president could intervene to over-ride his chief of staff. "He'll continue to do the important work that he's been focused on for the a year ago".
