Trump directs DOJ to ban 'bump stock' gun accessories

The president, making his first extensive remarks since the Florida killings, declared "school safety is a top priority for my administration", adding he will meet with state governors next week to discuss the topic.

Mr Trump said: "We must move past cliches and exhausted debates and focus on evidence-based solutions and security measures that actually work".

Trump spoke during a White House ceremony Tuesday recognizing bravery by the nation's public safety officers.

Lawmakers previous year floated proposals aimed at regulating the sale of bump stocks in response to the deadly October shooting rampage at a Las Vegas outdoor concert, in which 58 people were killed and hundreds of others were wounded. But the change Trump is proposing wouldn't have had any impact on the Florida shooting, which didn't involve a bump stock.

Trump's decision to call for a ban on devices like bump stocks shows the pressure lawmakers are facing to take action on guns in the wake of a spate of deadly mass shootings over the past few years.

US President Donald Trump has signed an order to ban bump-stock devices or modified guns that enables one to shoot hundreds of rounds per minute and was used by a gunman to kill 58 Las Vegas concert-goers in 2017.

"We must move past cliches and exhausted debates and focus on evidence based solutions and security measures that actually work", he said, adding the regulations would be drawn up "very soon".

The February 14 shooting in Florida has galvanised students across the country to rally in favour of stronger gun laws.

Last fall, the NRA released a statement in support of "additional regulations" on bump stocks, trigger cranks and "devices meant to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully automatic rifles".

Prior to being elected, Trump earned the support of the National Rifle Association.

The devices, which increase the rate of fire of a semi-automatic gun to mimic that of a fully-automatic firearm, may become the subject of a ban proposed by Trump Tuesday afternoon. Suspected shooter Nikolas Cruz was "troubled" and reportedly suffers from mental ill-health, yet was still able to acquire an AR-15 rifle.

The White House did not commit further regulations, such as a ban on assault weapons.

On Twitter, Trump hit out at Democrats over their alleged failure to pass gun control legislation.

Using social media, the teens rallied over the weekend, creating their lie-in (or as they called it, according to CNN, a "die-in.") on President's Day.
