Bibles and guns: it's like Glastonbury for conservatives

President Trump replayed a number of his greatest campaign hits during a freewheeling and at times angry speech to a room of conservative activists Friday in Washington, D.C. He appeared to deviate substantially from his prepared remarks, at one point asking the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, if they minded his going off-script, because his speech was "a little boring".

Trump said that despite his pledges to take some action on gun control from earlier in the week, he is still a firm supporter of the right to bear arms. "They will take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow to happen", the president said to major applause.

"You had one guard, he did not turn out to be really good, I will tell you that", Trump said. He declared his administration "has had the most successful first year in the history of the presidency", naming tax cuts and a regulatory overhaul as his chief accomplishments. He reiterated his push for "gun-adept teachers and coaches" to be able to carry concealed firearms and said it was "time to make our schools a much harder target for attackers - we don't want them in our schools".

"They're not giving us their best people, folks", Trump said. Hey, we are hanging in, we are hanging in, we are hanging in there.

The President also criticised Republicans, who did not support his agenda, referred to Arizona Senator John McCain, who has been battling cancer and voted against the Trump plan to repeal ObamaCare.

Trump attacked his vanquished 2016 rival Hillary Clinton, leading the crowd to begin a "lock her up" chant.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump let a woman tug the hair on top of his head to prove it is attached. Trump reiterated his campaign pledge to build a wall along the U.S.

Days after a dramatic White House meeting with survivors and the friends and family of victims of the Florida high school shooting, Trump said he had been moved by what he heard. "He was a leader, a great man", Trump said. It was also Trump's first stump speech for Republicans heading into the midterms later this year. She asks the snake why it bit her, and the snake responds, "You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in".

Some conservatives expressed dismay at CPAC's embrace of Trump.

This week conservatives from all over the country gathered at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, hosted by the American Conservative Union.

That segued into a recitation of "The Snake" - a controversial campaign-trail classic where he read the lyrics of a song that details how a woman takes in a sick snake only to have the reptile then bite and kill her. Trump has used it as an allegory for letting in risky immigrants who would then harm USA citizens.
