Top NFL Draft Prospect Reveals Teams Asked Him If He Was Gay

The most wildly uncool interrogations of 2018, so far at least, were posed to LSU running back Derrius Guice, who had separate teams ask him if he was homosexual and if his mother was a prostitute. The NFL later called it, "disappointing and clearly inappropriate".

"It was pretty insane", Guice said (via USA Today).

According to ESPN, the National Football League also conducted an investigation in 2013 after three draft prospects revealed they were asked questions about their sexual orientation. I go in one room, and a team will ask me do I like men, just to see my reaction.

The NFL expresses disappointment and reminds teams that it has a policy through its Excellence in Workplace Conduct program about team officials asking players such questions.

Guice said the question was one of several that were posed in an attempt to see how he would react and if he would get frustrated.

The league has issued warnings in the past - the Falcons apologized after Manuel's incident and went through a "training seminar", according to head coach Dan Quinn - but for one team, at least, those warnings have fallen on deaf ears. Two years ago, cornerback Eli Apple faced that question in a pre-draft interview with the Falcons.

Sure, Guice seems to have taken it in stride and believes it was just to get a reaction, but the National Football League needs to show clearer signs of progress and should avoid inappropriate and irrelevant questions moving forward. It is not clear which team or teams are feeling out players for homosexuality, but it is not a new or isolated practice.

Guice, who is considered a likely first- or second-round pick, turned pro early after posting his second consecutive season of 1,200-plus rushing yards and double-digit touchdowns.

The questions are highly inappropriate at best, and teams have been warned in the past about asking them. In 2010, Dez Bryant, now with the Dallas Cowboys, was asked if his mother was a prostitute by Miami Dolphins' evaluators.
