Despite Mueller's Push, House Republicans Declare No Evidence of Collusion

U.S. House Intelligence Committee Republicans said on Monday the panel had finished investigating Russian Federation and the 2016 U.S. election, and found no collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Moscow's efforts to influence the vote.

Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee on Monday announced they've concluded the interview portion of their Russian Federation investigation.

The GOP leaders will also "content that evidence does not support" the assessment by the USA intelligence community that Russia-at the urging of Vladimir Putin-tried to help Trump win. They will give Democrats that report on Tuesday and allow them to review and comment on it.

But the Russia-related investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller will likely continue for at least several more months, as Mueller finishes the obstruction of justice portion of his inquiry and moves to finish other parts of his probe.

Conaway and other committee officials said that after an exhaustive review of the thousands of source documents that went into developing that assessment, they largely agreed with its findings but with a major caveat: Information suggesting a "clear preference" by Putin for Trump did not meet the analytical standards required to support the assessment.

The House Intelligence Committee's investigation has been mired in partisan bickering almost from the start. Democrats are expected to dispute its conclusions as premature or partisan and raise what they call the roadblocks to a true investigation that Republicans put in place.

According to the AP the report will also counter a central conclusion of USA intelligence agencies that the Russians interfered in the 2016 election to help Trump win.

The committee's GOP leaders announced their decision on Monday, adding that they plan to release a report soon on their findings.

Conaway was referring to Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting in Trump Tower June 9, 2016, with a group of Russians who has promised political dirt on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton but didn't deliver. "By ending its oversight role in the only authorized investigation in the House, the Majority has placed the interests of protecting the president over protecting the country, and history will judge its actions harshly". Conaway said there will be a second report just dealing with the intelligence assessment and its credibility.

"The bottom line: the Russians did commit active measures against our election in '16, and we think they will do that in the future", Conaway said. Rep. Mike Conaway of Texas says the panel's GOP members don't accept the finding that Russian Federation sought to help Trump.

"We're through with interview phase".

Representative Adam Schiff, the top committee Democrat, strongly disagreed, and blasted the announcement as a premature shutdown.

Conaway previewed some of the conclusions, but said the public will not see the report until Democrats have reviewed it and the intelligence community has decided what information can become public, a process that could take weeks.

The House probe has been marred from its early days by steadily rising hostility between Republicans and Democrats, a dynamic that grew into a crippling distraction. Conaway, however, stopped short of saying there was "collusion" between Clinton's campaign and the Russians, something the President has alleged.

Schiff said Republicans have also refused Democrats' requests to subpoena vital documents, including financial and communications records that could verify or refute witness testimony.
