Myanmar Rejects Reports That It Committed Extreme Human Rights Violations

Yeehang Lee's comments follow the release of images by the human rights group Amnesty International.

The UN human rights chief said last week he strongly suspected there had been acts of genocide against the Rohingyas to which Myanmar's security adviser had called for "clear evidence". "It points at human rights violations of the most serious kind, in all likelihood amounting to crimes under global law".

Buddhist mobs backed by Myanmar's armed forces have launched a campaign of terror against Muslim families living in Rakhine State, killing and raping members of the minority group and torching their houses, forcing hundreds of thousands of them to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. "I am becoming more convinced that crimes committed".

The report expressed concern over a spike in reported human rights violations in the region that have resulted in significant displacement of population, further exacerbating a "longstanding humanitarian crisis".

Independent journalists have been barred from visiting the area, aside from rare government-escorted tours, and Myanmar has arrested two Reuters reporters for their detailed coverage documenting the killings. Yanghee Lee, another one of the investigators, said she fears that Facebook, despite all the good it has done for connecting people in Myanmar, has become "a beast".

The UN experts, who are tasked with investigating rights violations - including "genocide" - in Myanmar, said on Monday that Facebook played a role in the brutal atrocities against the Rohingya community by allowing hate speech to spread.

"It has ... substantively contributed to the level of acrimony and dissension and conflict, if you will, within the public".

The report was based on information gathered from a series of missions to Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand, where teams of investigators conducted over 600 in-depth interviews with victims and witnesses of reported human rights violations and abuses.

United Nations special rapporteur for human rights Yanghee Lee also submitted a report to the Human Rights Council this week, warning that violence against the Rohingya bore "the hallmarks of genocide," and expressing concerns over "high levels of hate speech and incitement to hostility, discrimination and violence, particularly on social media". Dieng said Myanmar had made "no genuine efforts" to ensure those who returned were guaranteed freedom and safety.

Lee adds that the ultra-nationalist Buddhists also have their own Facebook accounts which incite "a lot of violence and a lot of hatred against the Rohingya or other ethnic minorities".

However, Myanmar government led by Aung San Suu Kyi has vehemently denied U.S. and United Nations allegations of ethnic cleansing, insisting it was responding to attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army in late August.
