Another hardliner takes charge of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat

In a significant development, hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani on Monday resigned as chairman of his party Tehreek-e-Hurriyat but would continue to head the faction of Hurriyat Conference, a conglomerate of separatist groups. It was launched in 2004 after Geelani reached an "agreement" with the Jamaat.

Addressing the meeting, Geelani said due to his continuous house arrest for the past eight years, he had not been able to practically contribute to the cause, which was an "injustice" not only with the post but his conscience as well.

Sehrai and Geelani, both strong votaries of implementation of the United Nations resolutions on Kashmir, have been close associates for nearly six decades, first in the Jamiat-e-Islami J&K and later in the TeH.

A confidant of Geelani, Sehrai will be elected as the next chairman of the TeH when the elections to the post are held later this year. Sehrai will be interim chairman until formal elections are conducted as decided by Majlis-e-Shora. "I extend my fullest cooperation and honest wishes to the would-be leadership of the organization", Geelani, as per the TeH statement said. He was one of the accused in the Kashmir terror funding case.

"Sources said Geelani told the members:" I wilfully step-down from the chairmanship and advise Shoora to arrange an alternative at the earliest". They are now detained in Tihar Jail in New Delhi.

Geelani floated the TeH after the Hurriyat Conference split in 2003.

Geelani has been viewed as a key separatist leader in Kashmir Valley and has been vocal on advocating Kashmiri separatism. Geelani is not keeping well for the past several years.
