Siri privacy bug on iOS 11 compromises your hidden notifications

For those learning about this bug for the first time, basically even if you choose to disable previews in notifications, users can ask Siri to read their notifications out in which even those that are supposed to be hidden will be revealed.

This means that if you or anyone asks Siri to read your notifications, she will read aloud private messages sent via third-party apps, like Facebook Messenger, Slack or Signal, for everyone to hear.

As of iOS 11, you can set message notifications to be hidden on your Lock screen - you can see that a message has arrived, but its content is hidden. It then displays a very general "Mail message" for email and "iMessage" for text content in the notification box. As of now, you can fix this issue by disabling Siri while your iOS device is locked.

Interestingly, the bug does not work for Apple's native messaging app, meaning your iMessages are safe. Considering the iOS 11.3 is still in beta testing, Apple could add a fix to the bug before it publicly releases the software in the coming weeks.

The bug was discovered this week, with the command "read my notifications" yielding some surprising results for owners of Apple's flagship devices.

As pointed out by MacRumors, Apple iPhone X users have a reason to be anxious by this bug.

On the iPhone X, notification previews are hidden by default and details are shown only after Face ID authentication. The iOS 11 has been riddled with so many bugs and half-baked functionality that some of the users preferred to stick to the previous version. To do so, go to Settings Notifications select an app and turn off Show on Lock Screen.
