Turkey summit ends in failure, with Erdogan not answering to concerns

At least 12 PKK terrorists were "neutralized" Monday during operations as part of the Turkish military's fight against the terror group in northern Iraq and in Turkey.

But he added that "we will have a frank and open debate with President Erdogan".

This has all whipped up an increasingly acrimonious war of words and made Turkey's prospects of joining the European Union - an objective that Erdogan insisted earlier on Monday that Turkey still pursues - appear even more remote.

"Our operations against terrorism do not just contribute to our and the Syrians' security, but to Europe's security as well", Erdogan said.

"The two presidents discussed preparations for a regular meeting of the top-level Cooperation Council between Russia and Turkey and the second summit of the Astana process guarantor nations - Russia, Turkey and Iran - due to be held in early April in Ankara", the Kremlin said.

Another EU meeting in Brussels a week prior had ended with EU leaders condemning Turkey for the arrest.

"We hope that we have left a hard period in Turkey-EU relations behind", Turkish president said. So far this incentive has not been realised and Erdogan is expected to press this strongly in the talks.

But Sinjar's mayor, Ferhad Hiamd, voiced concerns that Turkey's threats could have a wider goal of strengthening its influence over regionally strategic Sinjar.

"There is a positive and good relation between Turkey and Russian Federation".

In Varna meeting, the European Union officials' perspective was an open indicator that the bloc does not want to discard Turkey from Europe because of its own interests, while once again presenting "home works for Ankara to meet requirements of Copenhagen criteria" in fundamental rights, and wants Ankara to "remain as a western country", Uluc Ozulker, Turkey's former ambassador to the European Union said.

Greek diplomacy has been able to put Erdogan's agenda on the tensions in the Aegean, the refugee crisis, Turkey's claims on several Greek islands and the main issue - the release of Greek border guards.

Juncker said the summit was one of "mixed feelings but not mixed messages", adding: "It was a good meeting because as this is the normal principle between big democracies, we were able to talk in all frankness and openness".
