Orange County Backs DOJ in Lawsuit Against California

The votes were the most dramatic development in a growing counter-movement in more conservative-leaning areas of the state against the sanctuary law, which the Democrat-controlled Legislature approved a year ago as the Trump administration called for more stringent immigration enforcement and a wall on the entirety of the US-Mexico border.

Hutchens announced on Monday she will put all county jail inmates' release dates online to get around SB 54, a law that took effect on January 1 and now prohibits local law enforcement agencies from cooperating with immigration authorities.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department sought to sidestep a California law created to limit law enforcement coordination with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying it would put the date an inmate will be released on its website.

My Administration stands in solidarity with the courageous citizens in Orange County defending their rights against California's illegal and unconstitutional Sanctuary policies.

"This legislation prevents law enforcement from removing criminals from our community and is a threat to public safety", said Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who has proposed joining the lawsuit by President Donald Trump's administration or filing a new one.

The county supported Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 presidential election, the first time it voted for a Democrat since the Great Depression.

The supervisors' vote follows a move by the Los Alamitos City Council last week to adopt an ordinance that would exempt the small northern Orange County city from SB-54, a California law that limits cooperation between local and state agencies. "Along the way, law enforcement should absolutely cooperate fully within the constraints of federal law", she said.

The lawsuit has highlighted longstanding divisions over immigration in California.

Advocates played music and held signs with slogans supporting sanctuary.

"Other times, I feel like I'm on a different planet, not just another county", he said.

"History tells us that we will win. It just doesn't make sense", Doris Matyasovich told the board. "Will you be able to do the same?" "Our constitutional republic depends on following the rule of law".

"The notion that the California legislature is looking to punish our local law enforcement is nonsense", he said.

California, a liberal state that is home to more than 10 million immigrants, passed its so-called sanctuary law a year ago to limit local police collaboration with USA immigration authorities.

"The Orange County Board of Supervisor does hereby reject the effort through state law to violate the Constitution of the United States and instead will comply with the appropriate Federal Laws and the Constitution of the United States and encourage all cities and agencies within the County of Orange to do the same", the resolution states.

"Attorney General Jeff Sessions is seeking to throw out this law". The supervisors adopted a resolution on a 4-0 vote condemning the state law after hearing from people on both sides of the issue.

"This is in response to SB-54 limiting our ability to communicate with federal authorities and our concern that criminals are being released to the street when there's another avenue to safeguard the community by handing them over (to ICE for potential deportation)", said Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes, according to the Register.
