Three Australian cricketers handed lengthy bans for ball tampering

The length of the ban is more severe for Smith and Warner due to their seniority in the national setup.

Cricket Australia (CA) has fingered banned vice-captain David Warner as the architect of a plan to cheat, alleging he advised Cameron Bancroft how to alter the ball with sandpaper in Cape Town.

South African batsman Hashim Amla said Wednesday that the controversy over ball tampering in the third Test against Australia "gives every team in the world a reality check".

On Saturday, Smith and Bancroft admitted during a post-match press conference that they'd conspired to scuff the ball in an attempt to gain an unfair advantage over South Africa.

An internal investigation by Cricket Australia found that Bancroft had been guilty only of carrying out instructions "to artificially alter the condition of the ball".

Members of the touring party were shocked to see their vice-captain drinking champagne at the team hotel on Monday, when CA's integrity chief Iain Roy grilled players over the ball-tampering ploy.

"No other players or support staff had prior knowledge and this includes Darren Lehmann who, despite inaccurate media reports, has not resigned from his position", said Sutherland.

"These are significant penalties for professional players and the Board does not impose them lightly".

Distraught and disappointed coach Darren Lehmann in Johannesburg, struggled to remain composed while detailing concerns for the banned players "going through a really rough time". However, Sutherland later revealed what was said between the two.

Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns have been called up as replacements ahead of the fourth and final Test in Johannesburg.

'To hear that the Australian cricket team had been involved in premeditated cheating is something that is embarrassing, ' Warne wrote for News Ltd.

"He brought everyone into a room when the next break was and he basically went through everyone and said "what is going on", Sutherland said. "It is hoped that following a period of suspension, the players will be able to return to playing the game they love and eventually rebuild their careers".

"I feel sorry for the fact they will have to live with this for the rest of their lives especially given the status they hold in cricket".

"The underarm incident has been well and truly dead and buried by this one", Tim King said on the streets of Sydney on Wednesday.

CA will soon conduct an independent review into the team's culture and conduct. He was removed from the position of vice-captain and barred from playing the rest match of the test series.

That incident, where Australia captain Greg Chappell instructed brother Trevor to bowl the final delivery of a one-day global underarm to prevent New Zealand from hitting a six to tie, has hurt the pride of the nation ever since. "One of the things that we decided we had to change was the public perception of us as people, not just on the cricket field but off it as well". "We've lost a great young man that's again made a mistake", he said. "So I think it's genuinely possible that the three guys that have already been mentioned are the only guys who did know about it at the time".
