An Internet Challenge Has Teenagers Snorting Condoms

The challenge involves snorting an unwrapped condom up one nostril, then pulling the condom from the throat out the mouth, reported Newsweek. What could go wrong?

The Condom Challenge was just one of many risky teen trends that parents were taught of in a new San Antonio class for parents who want to better understand what their kids are doing behind closed doors, KMPH reported.

Texas parents are among those being warned of the craze, with education specialist Stephen Enriquez telling Fox San Antonio: 'Because these days our teens are doing everything for likes, views and subscribers. A report published in 2004 in the Indian Journal of Chest Diseases and Allied Sciences detailed an "accidental condom inhalation" in which a 27-year-old woman unintentionally sucked a condom down her throat and into her lungs during oral sex. Another woman accidentally swallowed the condom and it blocked her appendix, leading to appendicitis. This freaky challenge is nothing new; the earliest recording of a person snorting a condom was back in 2007. As Kens5 puts it, "There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity, but the line isn't so fine when people snort condoms".

It seems a day doesn't go by without a new viral trend taking over our social media feeds.

"The nasal passages and sinuses have special cells that can be damaged if objects such as condoms are placed in them, potentially leading to a bacterial or fungal infection", he told CBS News.

Once you've watched someone inhale a condom through their nostril and pull it out of their mouth, it's a hard thing to unsee. Eventually YouTube started flagging videos that showed up regarding the challenge. That led to a rash of poisonings, with 142 reported by poison-control centers in January alone. Most of the 152 incidents involving condoms - 107 cases, to be exact - were related to ingestion, according to the statistics.

The condom challenge is going viral as the most recent life-threatening internet challenge.
