Egyptian President Sisi re-elected

Sisi won 21,835,378 votes, while Moussa won 656,534 votes, he added.

Sisi's serious rivals this time round had withdrawn from the race, been sidelined or detained.

Electoral officials on Monday announced the results of the 3 days of voting last week for the presidential election. Then, turnout was about 47 percent - but only after election officials agreed to extend the vote into a third day. His sole opponent, little-known politician Moussa Mustafa Moussa, was a supporter of the president who made no effort to challenge him. In the 2012 and 2014 elections, images circulated on social media showed one voter who wrote in "My vote is for you, Batman". Some voters said they were offered incentives to cast their ballots including money and food, local and worldwide media reported, but did not say who had made the offers.

Also in recent months, el-Sissi's popularity has suffered as a result of harsh economic reforms that have taken their toll on most Egyptians.

Security forces have sought to quell attacks by an Egyptian jihadist group that later declared allegiance to IS since the military ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, following mass protests against him.

The head of the election authority, which is supposedly independent of the state, hailed Mr Sisi's sweeping victory as a glorious moment for the country.

US President Donald Trump "congratulated" Sisi on his victory in a telephone call, the White House said in a statement that did not mention any worries over the fairness of the vote.

Mostafa Kamel al-Sayed, a political science professor at Cairo University, said there was a "big chance" Sisi would have the constitution amended.

Mr Sisi's main western and regional allies have been mostly silent over alleged human rights abuses in Egypt.

We have noted reports of constraints on freedoms of expression and association in the run-up to the elections, Nauert said.

Later in 2014, el-Sisi contested for Presidential election and won by nearly 97 percent votes.
