New Zealand hang on for series victory

I think we've got a good chance."How can England win?"

New Zealand could still win the second Test, having battled through to 42-0, in pursuit of 382, when bad light stopped play early on day four.

Opener Latham and BJ Watling (19) saw New Zealand through to lunch but their hard work came undone shortly after the break - the latter dismissed cheaply by Mark Wood (2-45) as Anderson took a simple catch at leg slip.

"We'd have loved a third Test - I think everyone would".

"We obviously didn't get off to the best start, the first couple of balls of the day certainly didn't go our way and we thought it could be a tough day but there was a lot of steel shown by the guys".

"I was trying to figure out which balls to play and which balls to get under", Sodhi said.

The ball didn't fall his way in England's two innings, but he showed huge heart to do his part for the team where others had come up short earlier in the day.

The pitch, by and large, continued its history of not deteriorating massively but for the eighth-wicket pair to soak up 31 overs was a magnificent effort along with the previous stand between Sodhi and Colin de Grandhomme which lasted 25 overs.

England's hopes of beating New Zealand were dealt a slight blow as only 66 overs were bowled on day four but they remain in with a chance to clinch victory on the final day in Christchurch.

England played its first match in Australia on November 4 and finally ended its tour five months later, though only a handful of players took part in all test and limited overs series.

James Vince and Mark Stoneman's half-centuries were individually and collectively valuable as England moved into a position of strength against New Zealand in the second Test.

This team consists of some of New Zealand's finest ever Test players and some new heroes.

New Zealand's success in the series was built on their new ball attack and Tim Southee was named Man of the Match for his 6-62 in England's first innings, while his partner Trent Boult won the series award for his 17 wickets over the two matches.

"He [Wagner] kept me going, there were some demons out there for sure", Sodhi said.

Ish Sodhi, who had batted exactly 200 minutes and faced 168 balls, was 56 not out at the close of play.

England, humiliated when dismissed for 58 in the first innings in Auckland, had been in the driving seat in Christchurch after scoring 307 in their first innings and 352-9 declared in the second after New Zealand's first knock of 278.

Henry Nicholls couldn't add more than 13 to the total as the home side was left reeling at 91/4 in the first hour of the day.
