Jobs report: U.S. workforce grew by 103000 in March

He added, "The upshot is that even though March was weaker than we were expecting, there is still evidence of an acceleration in the underlying pace of employment growth".

The result was less than a third of the payroll gains in February and far lower than the 175,000 analysts expected. In March, the Fed announced to raised interest rate to a range of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent, marking the sixth time since the financial crisis that it has raised rates. Last month, some hailed a massive return to the civilian workforce suggested by the jobs report, with the Household survey adding 806,000 to the workforce and showing that 653,000 left the "not in labor force" statuses in February.

Employment growth has occurred in many regions across the province; year-over-year increases include Stratford-Bruce Peninsula (7.3 per cent), Toronto (3.4 per cent) and Hamilton-Niagara Peninsula (2.3 per cent).

Growth estimates for the first quarter are mostly below a 2 percent annualized rate. Average hourly pay ticked up, climbing 2.7 percent compared with a year earlier.

"Considering how tight the labor market is in terms of the unemployment rate and [slow] population growth, it's hard to maintain 200,000 jobs being added every month", said Cathy Barrera, chief economist at ZipRecruiter. Economists expected average hourly earnings to rise 0.3% over the prior month and 2.7% over the prior year.

With layoffs at historic low levels, the sharp slowdown in job growth is likely to be temporary.

However, wage growth picked up in March.

Leisure and hospitality employers added only 5,000 jobs last month, the least since September.

There is hope that wage growth will accelerate in the second half of the year and allow the USA central bank to continue raising interest rates.
