Formula One: Vettel takes pole in Ferrari lockout

The Finn was P1 with a 1:29.868, five tenths quicker than the two Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

Vettel admitted after winning the season opener in Australia that his team still needed to make improvements to the SF71H, so F1 rivals Mercedes came into Bahrain favourites after Lewis Hamilton's dominant Q3 performance in Melbourne.

Valtteri Bottas was the faster of the two Mercedes but still 0.023s adrift of Raikkonen after losing a chunk of time to his fellow Finn in the middles sector of the lap.

That latest setback will hamper the Mercedes driver's chances of producing an immediate response to Vettel, who benefited from a Mercedes software glitch to beat the Briton in Melbourne.

"It was quite intense", Vettel said.

"I was very happy with both laps in the end, and very happy with the result and the way the auto was handling and responding", he added.

"I guess it ultimately proves everyone who said we had a party mode in the last race wrong", he said. "The vehicle has been excellent all weekend".

Hamilton was off the pace through most of qualifying and wound up fourth, having run Soft tyres during Q2, meaning he will start the race on the yellow-banded compound.

But he could only manage fourth, failing to improve his time on his final lap and leapfrogged by Bottas.

"Not easy", said Hamilton, looking ahead to Sunday's race. That is one less fast auto in Hamilton's way as he attempts to make ground.

Ferrari have upset the form book by being the quickest package during the weekend.

"We mostly tried to work on the set-up, and understanding the vehicle", he said. The set-up was right. But Toro Rosso chose to work with the Japanese engine supplier and both of their drivers did better in qualifying than McLaren.

Nico Hulkenberg along with Carlos Sainz place Renault best-of-the-rest with all the eighth and seventh quickest situations.

New Zealand driver Brendon Hartley complained about damage to his left front wing and soon find out why: he had hit a bird.

That put both Toro Rosso ahead of both McLarens, an embarrassing result for the team at the home race of their main shareholders the Bahraini royal family.

The prospect of seeing a Honda on the third row of the grid seemed a long way off for most of last season, as McLaren toiled frustratedly with the manufacturer.

However, they were off the pace as Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne missed out.

Williams are having a torrid weekend, Sergey Sirotkin and Lance Stroll at the back, the Russian almost half a second off the next slowest vehicle but 0.4secs up on his team-mate.
