CWG: Simbine upsets Blake to win 100 metres gold

It wasn't to be though for the second fastest man in history as he failed to recover from a poor start and ended third to the South African duo of Henricho Bruintjies (second) and Akani Simbine (first).

It is Simbine's first gold medal at a major championship and undoubtedly the highlight of his career, but he is not done yet.

Bolt, who retired previous year with eight Olympic golds including two 4×100 relay titles shared with Blake, tweeted his congratulations to his team mate and Simbine.

It marked Trinidad and Tobago's first gold in any event since Ato Boldon won the 100m at Kuala Lumpur 1998 and only their ninth ever.

So the pressure on Blake intensified.

Blake, who is tied with Tyson Gay as the second-fasted man in the world behind Usain Bolt, was heavily favoured to win the race.

"Maybe I was too confident and over thought it", said Blake, who appeared to be uncharacteristically quiet behind the blocks.

"I'm a bit disappointed because I've been feeling good, I've been running good and I just didn't put the start together", Blake said after the race, expressing his disappointment. Stella Chesang fought off Kenya's Stacy Ndiwa to take the 10,000m gold for Uganda and win her maiden Commonwealth medal.

"I'm just hoping that this inspires the youngsters back home to get out and come to training in the belief that they can get to the stage where we are".

"Being able to run in lane eight and lane nine with Henricho and placing first and second with him, it's really wonderful". "It's a big thing for South African sprinting and South African sport". England's Asha Philip was fourth in a repeat of her finish in Glasgow four years ago.

Ahye said: "I think my family and country will be very proud". "It means a lot".

Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi took silver at 21.14m, narrowly ahead of 2014 champion O'Dayne Richards of Jamaica.

Blake did manage a partial recovery for the bronze medal in 10.19. World and Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya kicked off her bid for a Commonwealth double with a comfortable win in the 1,500m heats in four minutes and 05.86 seconds.

Isaac Makwala of Botswana coasted across the line to win the opening heat of the 400 semifinals in 45.00 and then did three press ups as his rivals slumped behind him, heaving in deep breaths.

Makwala, who was barred from competing in the world championships' 400 final in London past year over illness fears, qualified fastest for the final with a time of 45.00 seconds.

After the first five events in the decathlon, defending champion Damian Warner has a 129-point lead over Canada teammate Pierce Lepage.

The Olympic bronze medalist opened with his season-best 10.29 in the 100, threw a personal best 15:11 meters in the shot put, recorded 7.54 in the long jump and a season-best 2.04 in the high jump. He capped off day one by winning his 400m in 48.12 for a total of 4509 points.
