Cannabis Industry Reacts Favorably To John Boehner's Jump Into Cannabis

It has been announced that former Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner, along with former Republican Governor of Massachusetts Bill Weld, have joined the Board of Advisors for Acreage Holdings, a multi-state corporation operating in the medical and recreational marijuana space.

Since his abrupt exit from Congress in 2015, Boehner has kept a relatively low profile, but during his days in Congress he made his penchant for wine well-known.

In a joint statement released Wednesday Boehner, who served as Speaker from 2011 to 2015, and former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, cited the recent experimentation by a number of USA states that have changed their marijuana laws in recent years as part of the reason for their decision.

"I have concluded descheduling the drug is needed so that we can do research and allow VA to offer it as a treatment option in the fight against the opioid epidemic that is ravaging our communities", he said.

Weld, a former federal prosecutor, said the conventional wisdom about marijuana during the Reagan administration was that it acted as a "gateway drug" to more harmful substances. Nixon added that legalizing pot use for non-medical reasons would end "a key front in the racist war on drugs" and generate hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue for the state through legal marijuana sales. - Derek Peterson, CEO of Terra Tech (TRTC), the largest publicly traded cannabis company in the US, with medical dispensaries in California and Nevada.

More than 60% of Americans believe recreational marijuana should be legal, double its popularity in 2000, according to a January 2018 poll by the Pew Research Center.

"This is a great step for the industry and a strong indicator of the political and social winds blowing in favor of legalization", said Derek Peterson, CEO of Terra Tech, a publicly traded cannabis company in the USA with medical dispensaries in California and Nevada.

Some cities and states have deliberately written their legalization rules to help convicted drug dealers get marijuana sales licenses, and prosecutors in California have even begun wiping out drug possession convictions for some low-level offenders.

"John Boehner's evolution on marijuana legalization mirrors that of both the American public in general and Republicans specifically".

"It would've been more helpful for him advocating for this 10 years ago", he said. If cannabis stores were mostly run by black felons, I'd celebrate.

Nixon, who is challenging Cuomo in a Democratic primary, said NY should follow the lead of eight other states and end a "key front" in what she called the "racist" war on drugs.

And despite Boehner's former stance on marijuana policy reform, Altieri welcomes his participation in the industry.
