GOP Lawmaker: Trump Administration Pledges Non-Interference In Legal Marijuana States

One of Gardner's primary points of contention with Sessions' decision to bring the hammer down on states with legal cannabis markets was his assurance during his confirmation hearings that he "would leave states that had legalized marijuana alone". Cory Gardner, R-Colo., that his administration will not interfere in his state's marijuana industry, prompting Gardner to lift a hold on Department of Justice nominees that he had imposed in protest.

Gardner hopes to introduce bipartisan legislation keeping the federal government from interfering in state marijuana markets. "We're consulting Congress about issues including states' rights of which the president is a firm believer and the statement that the senator put out earlier today is accurate", she said.

The Justice Department under former president Barack Obama created guardrails for federal prosecution of the sale and possession of cannabis, which remains illegal under federal law, and allowed legalized marijuana to flourish in states across the country.

"Given how much larger the USA cannabis market is in comparison to Canada or any other country this development is potentially game-changing for industry participants", he said in an emailed statement.

White Residence press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed Gardner's account of the president's pondering - nevertheless Courses' response was not immediately recognized.

"Given that advertising marketing campaign, President Trump has continuously supported states' rights to resolve for themselves how best to technique marijuana", Gardner talked about.

Sessions on January 4 rescinded a policy begun under Democratic former President Barack Obama that had eased enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states that legalized it.

Matt Fox, a spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, which advocates state control of marijuana laws, said this was a positive step in the short and long term - as a signal to Sessions to get more in line with Trump's previously-stated views on marijuana policy and as motivation for lawmakers to seriously tackle marijuana policy reform.

However, per year early in the day at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in Maryland, Trump had claimed he supported medical bud but predicted injectable bud "bad".

He singled out Colorado, the first state to allow recreational marijuana sales.

When he selected Sessions, a former federal prosecutor and US senator from Alabama, as his attorney general, marijuana supporters girded themselves for a crackdown.

Sessions once said he thought the Ku Klux Klan was "OK until I learned that they smoked pot", though he later claimed to be joking.

Trump's promise to the Senator diffuses the standoff that's been taking place between Gardner and nominees for the Justice Department. Gardner has met with Courses and Deputy Authorized skilled Regular Rod Rosenstein, the official overseeing the Russian Federation probe who has been the aim of Trump's ire.

While more than half of the US states have approved marijuana for medical or recreational use, it is still illegal under federal law.

Nine states have passed laws regulating marijuana use by adults.

The action came amid widespread speculation that Trump will remove Justice officials overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.
