'I was scared,' Bill Cosby accuser says of alleged assault aftermath

During almost three hours of cross-examination, which will continue on Monday, defense attorney Tom Mesereau established a total of nine face-to-face visits between Cosby and Constand before and after the alleged attack and asked whether Constand had ever seen Cosby's wife during those meetings.

Her testimony concluded a dramatic week at the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, where six accusers, including former supermodel Janice Dickinson, testified before the jury that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them. She said she trusted Cosby and thought of him as a mentor, so she took the pill.

Cosby's attorneys said again that they believe that Constand found a way to extort money from their client, and they believed the other women were regretful about a consensual affair with a married man.

He added that Constand was "a con artist". If convicted, the former TV star best known for his No. 1 family sitcom "The Cosby Show" faces up to 10 years in prison on each of three related aggravated indecent assault charges.

Prosecutors are hoping the cumulative impact of so many echoing accounts - in contrast to the first trial in which only one other woman was allowed to address the jury - will tip the outcome towards a guilty verdict.

Constand, who turned 45 on Wednesday, alleges Cosby drugged and molested her at his suburban Philadelphia mansion in January 2004, when she was a women's basketball administrator at his alma mater, Temple University.

"The question that I'm sure we're going to hear a lot about is, why would an innocent man pay $3.38 million for something he didn't do?" said lawyer Dennis McAndrews, who prosecuted chemical heir John E. duPont for murder in 1997 and is not associated with the Cosby retrial. Constand sued him in civil court back in 2005 and, according to The New York Times, the details of that suit were not revealed during the first criminal trial, but a judge ruled the settlement details could be mentioned in the current trial. Part of Mesereau's defense strategy was to arouse the sympathy of jurors.

"She's unconscious. She's out of it, " Steele said.

"Given that Mr. Cosby was just a little bit younger than my grandfather", she continued. Jackson says Constand told her that she could lie about being sexually assaulted by a celebrity in order to make money in a legal settlement.

Cosby's legal team at his first trial wasn't almost as aggressive in attacking Constand, focusing instead on inconsistencies in her statements to police and arguing the pair had a romantic relationship.

Chelan Lasha weeps as she returns to the courtroom after recess during the third day in the sexual assault case against actor and comedian Bill Cosby at the Montgomery County Courthouse April 11, 2018 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. When they awoke, they said, they realized that he had assaulted them.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done. I was trying to get my hands to move, my legs to move and the message just wasn't getting there ...

The defense lawyer went on to present a raft of other criticisms of Constand.

During the retrial, Mesereau denied having an intimate relationship with Cosby prior to the assault and denied having worn the Cashmere sweater he had given her.

Cosby, the attorney said, "made the awful mistake of confiding in this person what was going on in his life".

Mesereau tried to negate the impact of the women's testimony by portraying their stories as irrelevant to the charges involving Constand. They chose to call the police. "When you don't have a case you have to fill the time with something else".

There are a few other key differences to expect from the retrial. This is going to be a description of an alleged sexual assault. More than 50 women have come forward to accuse Cosby, all before the explosion of #MeToo.

Under cross examination, Thomas testified that she chronicled her trip to Reno in a scrapbook and recorded a cassette tape at the home where she had the encounter with Cosby. Victims also took time to report incidents to the police. She said she had not totally understood what had happened until she was driving home.
