Colorado teachers plan Monday walkout to call for higher pay, better funding

- Education funding: Colorado effectively has underfunded its schools by $828 million, the CEA says, because the state hasn't kept up with a state constitutional mandate passed last decade to increase funds each year by at least the rate of inflation.

It's a conversation they want lawmakers to start hearing.

Katrina Ruff, a local Oklahoma City teacher, stood with hundreds of fellow protestors at the Capitol chanting "No funding, no future!"

"We're just hoping that by all of us showing up that they know we're not giving up", said Jana Young, a special education teacher's assistant from Enid Public Schools.

Englewood teachers planned to use personal days to go to the capitol.

After seeing teachers in other states agitate for more funding, Colorado educators are taking their turn. "Legislators are working with a positive state revenue forecast in this session - they have substantially more money at their disposal this year to invest in educators and our students", the Colorado Education Association said in a statement.

But Preist said the efforts by teachers to win more money for education is not over.

Ms Amankwah said the practical aspect of teaching at the pre- school level should be more than the theory to enhance the children's understanding of the subject at hand. This, she said, could be made possible with the use of recreational objects in the teaching of a particular subject.

Kelly Marsaln-McBride, an eighth-grade science and leadership teacher with Berryhill Public Schools, said the education union doesn't speak for her. The association is asking its members to wear red - reminiscent of what teachers in Arizona have been doing in a campaign they've called #RedForEd.

Nusrat and Nadel viewed their work with Madison High School as an opportunity to put their education into practice and spread the values they have learned at Drew. The large amount of teachers who called in on Monday forced the district to cancel classes, due to lack of substitute teachers.

"I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them", Bevin told reporters Friday.

"Some were introduced to drugs for the first time - because they were vulnerable and left alone", he added.

The teachers join educators in West Virginia, Oklahoma and Arizona who have taken similar actions.

The success of West Virginia teachers inspired educators in the other states to follow suit.
