Russian Federation blocks 1.8 million Amazon, Google IPs

In 2016, the powerful agency teamed up with the Kremlin to push through a new terrorism law that grants security officials sweeping backdoor access to encrypted apps like Telegram.

The regulator has also asked Apple and Google to pull Telegram from their Russian app stories. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov remained defiant and said his company will take measures to avoid the blocks.

"Now they are targeting one of the most popular messaging apps in Russian Federation simply for having the courage and integrity to respect the privacy of its users".

Regardless of the ban, Durov announced on Tass (Translated from Russian) that Telegram would still be able to notify its Russian users about the situation. The Russian government has reportedly attempted to block Zello's online radio services over 70 times in the previous year after the company "refused to monitor its users and provide information about them to Russian special services".

Reuters cites Russian media reports that Roskomnadzor promptly added Telegram to its register of banned websites, but was vague about precisely when service could be interrupted.

The service, ranked the world's ninth most popular messaging app with over 900 million users worldwide, argued that the request for encrypted messages was unconstitutional.

Russian Federation began blocking access to the popular messaging app Telegram yesterday in one of its biggest crackdowns on the internet.

So far, neither Amazon nor Google have commented publicly on the blocking of their hosting's IP addresses.

In addition to the Russian government closing in on Telegram, Bleeping Computer reported that the Roskomnadzor, the Russian government's watchdog agency of all things telecommunications, has removed over 16 million IP addresses.

Many users of the Odnoklassniki social network say they have been unable to publish new posts or open old ones, according to the Mediazona news website. APKMirror also received a request from Russian Federation to remove the Telegram app in Russian Federation. By doing so, Roskomnadzor also blocked a number of legitimate services, including online games, mobile apps, and cryptocurrency services.
