Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Artificial Sweeteners

"Despite the addition of these non-caloric artificial sweeteners to our everyday diets, there has still been a drastic rise in obesity and diabetes", said Dr. Brian Hoffmann of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University, who led the research.

A brand new scientific study suggests that diets high in artificial sweeteners could contribute to diabetes and obesity at levels comparable to diets packed with glucose, but through drastically different methods.

Every couple of years a new artificial sweetener comes out claiming that it's much better than the other artificial sweeteners around, which cause cancer and death, and are the worst thing that you can put in your body.

Findings were presented on Sunday during the 2018 Experimental Biology meeting held in San Diego.

In the latest study, researchers examined the consumption of sugar or sugar substitutes in rats and their effects on cultured cells.

"Our stem cell-based studies indicate that low-calorie sweeteners promote additional fat accumulation within cells compared with cells not exposed to these substances, in a dose-dependent fashion-meaning that as the dose of sucralose is increased more cells showed increased fat droplet accumulation", Sabyasachi Sen, associate professor of medicine at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., said in a statement.

Artificial sweeteners are used by many people trying to lose weight.

'In our studies, both sugar and artificial sweeteners seem to exhibit negative effects linked to obesity and diabetes, albeit through very different mechanisms from each other'. Following three weeks, the specialists saw noteworthy contrasts in the concentration of amino acids, fats, and biochemicals in blood tests.

So, they focused on two sugars (glucose and fructose) and the zero-calorie sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame potassium.

He adds that doctors are now learning that artificial sweeteners may change bacteria in the gut which can lead to inflammation, insulin resistance, and pre-diabetes.

"We observed that in moderation, your body has the machinery to handle sugar; it is when the system is overloaded over a long period of time that this machinery breaks down", Hoffmann said in a press release.

Researchers found that artificial sweeteners change how the body forms fat and gets energy.

But should you go back to sugar then?

Sugar is the enemy, but so are those sugar replacements (allegedly).

Zero-calorie sweeteners changed how the body metabolises fat and how it uses energy stores.
