Mitt Romney Fails To Secure Utah Senate GOP Nomination, Will Face Primary

Earlier this year, Kemberlee blogged about former MA governor and former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney announcing his Senate run in Utah.

The 2012 GOP presidential nominee, who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump to replace retiring Republican Sen.

Mitt Romney was forced into a Republican primary in his bid for U.S. Senate in Utah after losing a nomination battle Saturday at the state's far-right-leaning GOP convention.

In votes against party delegates, Romney ended 2nd at their country & rsquo; s Republican Party convention in West Valley City, behind country lawmaker Mike Kennedy.

After a wild and raucous day of voting at the Utah GOP convention, the former MA governor and 2012 Republican presidential nominee was unable to win the 60% that he needed to head to the November ballot unopposed. "Frankly, given the fact that I collected signatures and the delegates don't like people who collect signatures, I'm delighted with the outcome", Romney said, according to the Desert News. At the Utah GOP Convention, Romney split the vote with conservative state Rep. Mike Kennedy, who acknowledged that after a long day at convention, the room was getting exhausted.

During Saturday's GOP convention in Utah, Romney faced 11 other candidates.

"So I'm not a cheap date", he added.

Convention delegates tend to be more conservative than the general Utah Republican electorate, and Romney would not be the first candidate to lose there but win the primary.

On the second round of voting, Utah state representative Mike Kennedy emerged in the lead with 50.88%.

Although Romney accepted Trump's endorsement, he had attacked him as a "phony" and "fraud" during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Stay-at-home mother Michelle Cluff said she liked Romney's experience and believes he is ready to get to work as a senator.

Delegates preferred Kennedy to Romney, 51% to 49% respectively.

The primary election will June 26, with ballots mailed to voters three weeks before election day. "I'm exhausted of business as usual in Washington, D.C". Trump responded, saying Romney had "choked like a dog" when he ran for president in 2012.
