House Intel Committee Releases Final Russia Report-No Collusion Found

The House Intelligence Committee released a redacted version Friday of a report on its year-long investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Along with alleged links between the Russian government and the Trump and Clinton campaigns, the investigation examined Russian interference in the 2016 US election, the USA government's response to the meddling, and leaks of classified information.

The committee is headed by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), who was part of Trump's transition team and is far from a neutral observer.

In the final document, the committee said that "there is no evidence that Trump associates were involved in the theft or publication of Clinton campaign-related emails".

The lawmakers criticized Donald Trump Jr. for meeting Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya in search of damaging info on Hillary Clinton.

The Mueller investigation, he said, is "a witch hunt".

Committee Democrats rejected the Republican majority's conclusions in the report. The probe, they insisted, is not over yet. In Friday's release, the committee elaborated and exonerated Trump from accusations of wrongdoing, claiming instead that it was the intelligence community and Federal Bureau of Investigation that failed to properly respond to interference in the 2016 election.

The June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower is an area of inquiry in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether anyone from the Trump campaign colluded with Russians. They added that interaction between Trump's team and WikiLeaks, which published emails obtained in a hack of the Democratic National Committee, was "highly objectionable and inconsistent with United States national security interests".

The 253-page document comes a little over a month after Republican lawmakers on the panel concluded there was no collusion or coordination between President Donald Trump and Russian Federation.

"I was very honored by the report", President Trump said from the White House.

"There are a number of things happening (and will happen) this election via cyber operations (by both hacktivists, nation-states and the DNC)", Flynn wrote in the email, using an acronym for the Democratic National Committee.

"When we started this investigation, we set out to give the American people the answers to the questions they've been asking and we promised to be as transparent as possible in our final report". Some portions of the public report are redacted for national security reasons.

The committee's investigation began with bipartisanship but ultimately succumbed to factional squabbling. The finding was vehemently opposed by Democrats and other critics who contend the committee did not do its due diligence in investigating connections between Trump's associates and the Kremlin. Republicans say they will pressure intelligence agencies to be able to release more information. He said numerous blacked out details include information already public such as witness names and previously declassified information. The panel also recommended the executive branch "crack down" on leaks by conducting polygraphs.
